Decline of

Antarctic

Glaciers

Two studies that were

published conclude that a

section of the West Antarctic

ice sheet has reached a point

of inevitable collapse.

The first study, led by Eric Rignot of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, used NASA satellite and airborne observations to measure how glaciers have been retreating in the region.

The other study, led by Ian Joughin of the University of Washington, used a computer model to compare observations of recent melting with projected melt scenarios to see which matches reality best so far.

PARIS
AGREEMENT

The Paris

Agreement

The paris agreement is a legally binding

international treaty on climate change.

It was adopted by 196 Parties at COP 21 in

Paris, on 12 December 2015 and entered

into force on 4 November 2016.

Its goal is to limit global warming to well below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels.

The Paris Agreement is a landmark in the

multilateral climate change process because,

for the first time, a binding agreement brings

all nations into a common cause to

undertake ambitious efforts to combat

climate change and adapt to its effects.

Everyone who attended the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) made emission-cutting pledges. These are known as “intended nationally determined contributions”, or INDCs for short.

Unfortunately, the election of Donald Trump in 2016 led to the United States declaring it would withdraw from the Paris treaty.
